Come Walk in My Shoes

In 2003 and 2005, we were invited to film Congressman John Lewis as he led colleagues from the House and Senate on an emotional pilgrimage to, in his words, “sacred sites of the civil rights movement” in Alabama.

Come Walk in My Shoes provides a fresh, first-person perspective on the role young people played in nonviolent protests that challenged segregation laws in the South and led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965. It was produced in partnership with the Faith & Politics Institute and chronicles an experiential learning program that cultivates mutual respect, moral reflection, and honest conversation among political leaders.

Combining personal recollections with archival film, historic photographs, and music recorded at mass meetings, we were able to distill one whole decade in the nonviolent struggle for racial equality into a powerful one-hour documentary.
